Duke-UNC portal opens Friday

Want to take a look at Chapel Hill without having to travel down Tobacco Road?

A video portal to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be officially unveiled in the Bryan Center at 2:15 p.m. The portal is on the center’s first floor, and UNC’s portal is located in their Union. For the first conversation, President Richard Brodhead will speak to UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp.

Each portal has a high-definition monitor, a microphone and speakers, allowing for easy communication from both sides. The $5,000 budget was split equally between the schools.

The portal is the brainchild of Duke sophomore Zac Elder and UNC sophomore Christopher Batchelder.

“We just thought it would be really cool to have another connection between schools that share so much already,” said Elder, a sports associate editor for The Chronicle.

After Friday’s ribbon cutting ceremony, the portal will be open to everyone.
