Week 7 Football: Around the ACC

Duke fell to Virginia Tech this week, but that wasn't the only big game in the ACC. Here's a quick rundown of Week 7's ACC games, including UNC traveling to Miami and Florida State righting the ship.

North Carolina 18, Miami 14

The Tar Heels picked up a huge road ACC victory over the Hurricanes to move to 5-2 overall with 2-1 conference play record. Giovani Bernard led the way for North Carolina with 177 yards on 27 carries to go along with two touchdowns. Bryn Renner added 214 yards through the air at quarterback. The Tar Heels were able to prevail despite committing 15 penalties for an astounding 140 yards. Running back Mike James and quarterback Stephen Morris each scored touchdowns on the ground for the Hurricanes. Morris suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter that may keep him out of next week's game. Miami fell to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the ACC. They do, however, still lead the ACC Coastal division following the defeat.

Maryland 27, Virginia 20

Maryland jumped out to an early 17-0 lead in the first quarter, and managed to maintain it on the road against the Cavaliers. Freshmen receiver/kick returner Stefon Diggs set the tone right away, returning the opening kickoff of the game 100 yards for a touchdown. Meanwhile another freshmen, quarterback Perry Hills, threw for 237 yards and a touchdown while adding a touchdown on the ground. Maryland was able to come out on top despite having -2 total yards of rushing. Virginia sophomore running back Kevin Parks generated 129 yards on 17 carries to lead the Cavaliers. Virginia was able to cut the lead to 17-13 by the end of the third quarter, but an early fourth quarter touchdown run by Hills widened a lead that would never be relinquished. The Terrapins currently lead the ACC Atlantic with a perfect mark of 2-0.

Florida State 51, Boston College 7

No. 12 Florida State got back on track after last week’s devastating loss to N.C. State. This one was never much of a game, as the Seminoles stretched their lead to 28-0 by the midway point of the second quarter. They out-gained Boston College in total yards 649-225. E.J. Manuel lit it up, throwing for 439 yards and four touchdowns, with 295 yards and three of those touchdowns coming in the first half. Receivers Kenny Shaw and Rodney Smith both amassed over 100 yards. Eagles’ running back Andre Williams was able to gain 104 yards on the ground in the losing effort, becoming the first opponent to crack the century mark in rushing yards against the Seminoles in over a year. Florida State kicker Dustin Hopkins had a milestone of his own, as he became the ACC’s all time leading scorer with a 51-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
