Week 5 Football: Around the ACC

Duke's victory over Wake Forest was just one of the many interesting games around the ACC this past weekend. Here's a rundown of the other ACC games, including a surprising Georgia Tech result and another Florida State victory.

Middle Tennessee 49, Georgia Tech 28

In one of the nation’s biggest upsets of the week, Middle Tennessee running back Benny Cunningham ran for 217 yards and five touchdowns, leading his Sun Belt squad past the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech turned the ball over four times in its third defeat of the year.

Miami 44, N.C. State 37

Miami quarterback Stephen Morris threw for an ACC-record 566 yards to go along with five touchdowns, including the game winning 62-yard strike to Phillip Dorsett with 19 seconds to go. N.C. State’s Mike Glennon threw for an also impressive 440 yards and four touchdowns in defeat.

Clemson 45, Boston College 31

This one was tight  until No. 17 Clemson ran away with the game late in the third quarter. Tajh Boyd racked up 367 yards through the air and accounted for four total touchdowns for the Tigers. Of those yards, 197 went to DeAndre Hopkins, including a 35-yard touchdown to cap off the scoring.

North Carolina 66, Idaho 0

This one was over early as the Tar Heels went up 28-0 by the end of the first quarter. Bryn Renner accounted for 231 passing yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half before being pulled in the rout.

Louisiana Tech 44, Virginia 38

For the second straight week, Louisiana Tech won a road game against a BCS conference team. The Bulldogs outscored the Cavaliers 21-0 in the third quarter to take a 41-24 lead. Virginia’s comeback efforts fell just short, and they fell to 2-3 on the year. They come to Durham next week to take on the 4-1 Blue Devils.

Cincinnati 27, Virginia Tech 24

Virginia Tech lost its second game of the year in heartbreaking fashion, as Cincinnati’s Munchies Legaux connected with Damon Julian for a 39-yard touchdown with only 13 seconds remaining on the clock. Legaux was the star of the game, throwing for 376 yards to go along with three touchdowns.

Florida State 30, South Florida 17

The ACC favorite kept its undefeated season and national championship hopes alive with a solid road victory. EJ Manuel threw for 242 yards and a touchdown at quarterback, and linebacker Christian Jones recovered a fumble late in the third quarter and took it for a touchdown. The Seminoles moved to third in the AP poll, passing LSU.
