When Nick McCrory won the bronze medal in the men's synchronized 10-meter platform with partner David Boudia, his Olympic journey was not over. In fact, it was only just beginning.
Nearly two weeks later, McCrory was back on the platform in London, attempting to add a second medal to his Olympic accolades. McCrory, who along with teammate Abby Johnston were the first Duke divers in program history to qualify for the Olympic games, competed in the preliminary round of the men's 10-meter platform Friday afternoon. He qualified for the semifinal round with a score of 480.90 points over six dives, finishing eighth out of the 32 divers competing. China's Qiu Bo was the leader after the preliminaries, posting a score of 563.70 points.
McCrory continued to show this consistency throughout the first round of competition, averaging scores of 8.0 or better on five of his six dives. His highest-scoring dive was his last of the day, a back 2 1/2 somersault with 2 1/2 twists, a dive with a 3.6 degree of difficulty which earned McCrory 86.40 points.
His partner-turned-opponent, Boudia, placed 18th, earning the last spot in the semifinals.
The semifinal round will take place tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m. EST. Scores from the preliminary rounds will not carry over, and the top 12 divers will advance to the final round, slated for 3:30 p.m. EST Saturday. Both rounds will be re-aired in primetime Saturday night on NBC, but can be watched live on NBCOlympics.com.
