Vernerey, Gray lead Duke past Seahawks

The Blue Devils didn't miss a step after a week off for final exams, rolling past UNC-Wilmington 107-45 Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke (8-2) scored 78 points in the paint against its undersized opponent, including a team-high 22 from junior Allison Vernerey and 16 from freshman Elizabeth Williams.

"They're two great players, and they're beginning to understand how to play together," head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "It's still December. It takes a little time. But I thought that they both just [had] great poise and understanding where each other's going to be."

The Seahawks (5-5) were thrown off all night by the Blue Devils' full-court press. The team committed 40 turnovers on the night, directly leading to 56 Duke points.

"Our fast break was awesome off of turnovers today," said sophomore Tricia Liston, who scored 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting in 20 minutes of play. "I thought we did a good job getting it up the court and getting some quick layups."

The Blue Devils spread the ball around effectively as well, recording 36 assists, including 10 by sophomore Chelsea Gray. Gray also added 14 points.

Abria Price led UNC-Wilmington with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting.

The Blue Devils will next take the court Friday, Dec. 30 against Temple in Philadelphia.
