No one was surprised Thursday when Mitch McGary, the No. 2 overall player in the Class of 2012 according to ESPN, committed to Michigan over Duke and Florida. But head coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff still have a chance to get a player even better than McGary in the Class of 2012—small forward Shabazz Muhammad, the consensus No. 1 player in the class. As they were with McGary, the Blue Devils are not considered to be the favorites for Muhammad, but they got a good sign from the athletic wing Monday when his father Ron Holmes told Adam Zagoria of SNY that he would visit Duke for the game against North Carolina March 3.
Muhammad is 6-foot-5, and plays for Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev. Two of his teammates have committed to major Division I programs in the last week—forward Rosco Allen to Stanford and forward Ben Carter to Oregon—but Muhammad is expected to wait until the spring signing period to choose a school. The left-handed Muhammad stands 6-foot-5 with excellent length and physical tools, and he possesses outstanding scoring instincts. His father told Zagoria that he holds Krzyzewski in very high regard, especially after Krzyzewski took an in-home visit to Las Vegas Sept. 12.
Muhammad is also considering Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas A&M, UCLA and hometown UNLV.
