McGary and Parker to announce soon

After a slow summer of commitments, verbal commitments from 2012’s top ranked players are coming fast and furious. Of the top 100 ranked 2012 prospects by scout.com, only 23 have not verbally committed.

Mitch McGary is set to announce his decision this week. The five star big man is down to Florida, Michigan and Duke.

Tony Parker spent the past weekend at Duke for his official visit. The Georgia big man sat behind Coach Krzyzewski and talked with special assistant Nate James much of the game Saturday night. Quinn Cook was Parker’s host for his official visit. The 6-foot-9 center will likely make his college decision soon as he is expected to sign in the early signing period. Parker will decide between Duke, UCLA, Georgetown, Memphis and Ohio State.

According to Adam Zagoria’s blog, Tony Parker told SNY.tv, “I’m looking forward to getting it over with. Really focusing in on my season. We got a big year this year.”

Duke is not considered to be the leader for McGary or Parker, which has the fan base concerned considering the urgent need for an immediate-impact big in a 2012 class loaded with talented post players. At this point, Duke is not known to be heavily involved with any other top 100 2012 big.

Duke’s third major target for 2012, Shabazz Muhummad, was at USC this past weekend for an official visit according to his twitter. Muhummad’s father, Ron Holmes, played for the Trojans from 1981-85. This was Muhummad’s third official visit. He has already taken official visits to Kentucky and Texas A&M. Duke remains in the mix for the 6-foot-6 wing and is expected to receive an official visit. Based on speculation, Muhammad will likely take his official for the Duke-UNC game on March 6th. Muhummad plans to announce in the spring and sign during the regular signing period.

The early signing period is November 9-16. The regular signing period is April 11- May 16.

In other news: One more top 100 player will be off the board Wednesday when Durham native and McGary’s high school teammate, TJ Warren, announces his college decision. Warren is deciding between Georgetown and NC State. Warren eliminated North Carolina from his list after the Tar Heels picked up a commitment from Brice Johnson last week. N.C. State is thought to be the favorite for Warren. If Warren commits to the WolfPack, it would give N.C. State one of the best recruiting classes in the country with Rodney Purvis and Tyler Lewis already committed. Warren’s father played for N.C. State.
