Value of the new IFC intake process?

An article in yesterday’s Chronicle reported that the overall Interfraternity Council (IFC) intake process will be one week shorter, but failed to mention that the first round will consist of one event (in addition to the perennial open house) per fraternity. In the past, complaints of dirty rushing have permeated the recruitment process, and this reduction of events before first-round cuts seeks only to exacerbate this practice as fraternities have less time to meet potential new members during formal rush. Additionally, I asked one of the administrators involved in designing this new process about the effects of the shorter first round, and she replied that she hoped people who would not receive second-round invitations in the past might receive invitations under this new system. Individuals who receive second-round invitations simply because fraternities are not actually allowed the chance to meet them in the first round are unlikely to receive third-round invitations, so isn’t this new system wasting everyone’s time and resources?
