Apparently Duke will be looking to the post for more than just rebounds this year.
Blue Devil head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced today that the team will be looking for leadership down low as well, as forwards Miles Plumlee and Ryan Kelly were named team captains.
"Miles and Ryan have really grown in our program and worked hard to put themselves in this position," Krzyzewski said in a press release. "They have both been able to develop under some outstanding captains over the past couple of years and have prepared themselves to lead this year's team. We are looking forward to watching them continue to emerge as leaders on and off the court."
The captains were selected by both the coaches and their teammates.
Plumlee enters his senior season having started 41 games at Duke, averaging just over four points and four rebounds per game in his career. The eldest Plumlee, brother to junior Mason and freshman Marshall, is the lone senior on this year's squad.
Kelly had a breakout sophomore season last year after playing sparingly in his freshman campaign. The two-time ACC All-Academic team selection scored 6.6 points per game last year while pulling down 3.7 rebounds and was arguably the Blue Devils' most impressive player on their recent international trip to China and Dubai.
"It's a huge honor to be voted to this position by my teammates and the coaching staff," Kelly said in the release. "It's something I aspired to be when I came to Duke. I'm going to use it to help my team and do whatever I can to lead. We're obviously going to ask for leadership from all the players on the team, but I look to be somebody who all of my teammates can look to and say, 'He's always playing his hardest, and we can always count on him.'"
