Today, The Chronicle featured center Allison Vernerey's work with the Duke Cancer Institute.
One of the causes she has been closely involved with is Strike Out Cancer, which in tandem with the Durham Bulls, donates money to cancer research any time a Bulls pitcher strikes a batter out.
Vernerey linked up with the Duke Cancer Institute in part through her head coach, Joanne P. McCallie, who has served as a spokeswoman for Strike Out Cancer. Vernerey and McCallie had a fun encounter over the summer when the 6-foot-5 center directed a commercial for the Duke Cancer Institute featuring her head coach.
