This morning, senior Matthew Grape died in a car accident near campus. The accident took place on Academy Road near Duke University Road at approximately 2:40 a.m. when the car—driven by Lee Royster, also a senior—ran off the road and struck a tree, according to a Durham Police Department news release.
Royster was taken to Duke University Hospital for minor injuries. Grape was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We have few details of the accident right now, but, regardless, the loss is devastating and tragic," Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta wrote in an email to the student body this morning.
There will be an open gathering at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the Devil's Den on Oregon Street on Central Campus for Grape.
