Moore, Duke nemesis, named top female athlete

Add another award to Maya Moore's trophy shelf.

The Connecticut forward, who was drafted first in this spring's WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx, earned the Honda-Broderick Cup for the second consecutive season, an award that celebrates the top female collegiate-athlete in the nation. This season she also was named a first team All-American for the fourth consecutive year and won the Naismith College Player of the Year award for the second time in three years.

Moore and the Huskies faced off against Duke twice this year, handily defeating the stellar Blue Devil squad twice. The first of those occassions was on January 31, when Connecticut put a halt to Duke's 20-0 start to the season by clobbering Duke 87-51. Moore notched 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in that game on 11-17 shooting.

The two powerhouses next saw each other in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, where the Huskies again torched the Blue Devils to the tune of a 75-40 victory. In that game, Moore scored her 3,000th career point with a double-double, knocking down 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She was also a menace defensively with seven steals.
