After a weekend of dominant play, the Blue Devils won the Irish Creek Collegiate with an eight-under performance, giving them their second tournament win of the spring.
Entering Sunday, Duke trailed conference foe Wake Forest by only one stroke. The final round, though, proved disastrous for the Deamon Deacons and the Blue Devils capitalized, posting a one-under 283 as they cruised to a seven-shot victory.
Led by junior Spencer Anderson and sophomore Julian Suri, Duke exhibited tremendous consistency throughout the weekend’s three rounds. Anderson finished three-under par and tied for fifth place, his highest tournament finish of the season. The highlight of his tournament, though, occurred on Saturday when the junior carded an eagle on the course’s fifth hole, a 322-yard, par four en route to a 69.
Suri, who took seventh, carded the team’s lowest score in the final round. The sophomore fired a three-under 68 on Sunday, making key putts late in the afternoon to birdie three of his final six holes.
Similar to his teammate, fellow sophomore Tim Gornik also posted a season-low 68 performance on Saturday in a round that included two birdies and an eagle.
Ultimately, the Blue Devils’ short game and prowess around the green propelled them to victory in a tournament that also included rival North Carolina, which finished tied for ninth.
