In a Wednesday appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doug Collins had some interesting remarks about the future of his son, Duke associate head coach Chris Collins, in the coaching world. Patrick asked Collins about Mike Krzyzewski's future at Duke, and which one of the two associate head coaches—Steve Wojciechowski and Chris Collins—would eventually take the helm.
"I would not recommend my son to take that job," Collins said. "They still talk about John Wooden at UCLA, you know, and I think to follow coach [Krzyzewski] would be... I don't know how you could do that."
Collins, who served brief stints as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania and Arizona State before permanently leaving the college ranks to become an NBA coach and TV analyst, cited not only Krzyzewski's impact on the court, but his lasting effects all around campus as reason for why whoever becomes Duke's next head coach faces a daunting task. Since Chris has yet to accumulate any head coaching experience, Collins says he has told his son to explore the option of leaving the Blue Devils for a head coaching position.
"I think you're eventually going to see Chris go somewhere else. I don't think you're going to see him sit around there and wait for Coach K," Collins said. "I see Coach K coaching there another seven, eight years if he can continue to get the players and be competitive."
That said, though, Doug says that there is no reason for his son to leave Duke for just any head coaching position.
"He's going to be very selective where he goes because he's got one of the best jobs in the country as it is right now," Collins said. "Chris does not want to go into a situation where you're going into a program that has been really, really down, and you're going to try to rebuild that."
