According to the Herald-Sun, “A dozen lawsuits and liens have been filed at the Durham County courthouse, claiming that multiple holding companies and the three owners owe more than $27.4 million to investors and mortgage companies.”
This news is bleak for former Duke University basketball stars Christian Laettner and Brian Davis, and Durham-based developer Tom Niemann who own West Village. Real estate experts who spoke to the Herald-Sun are speculating that they will likely lose their properties or have to file bankruptcy.
Residents, however, may not be directly affected by the outcome of these legal proceedings.
“I really don’t think that in terms of the daily operations, you will see much, if any, change,” President of Downtown Durham Inc. Bill Kalkhof said when speaking to the Herald-Sun about how tenants could be impacted by the lawsuits.
Anne Marie Gordon, current West Village resident and Duke senior, said that nothing had been relayed to the tenants about the owners of the buildings.
