Due to political turmoil in Egypt that has resulted in widespread violence, the International Travel Oversight Committee voted to restrict travel to the country, Duke announced Wednesday.
The restriction will be reviewed Feb. 28, considering guidance from the University’s travel insurance provider as well as governmental warnings and advisories, a Duke news release noted.
Undergraduates cannot travel to Egypt using Duke funds or credit without the committee’s approval. Graduate and professional students must register their travel and sign a high-risk travel release form.
“Given the difficulties that Duke travelers experienced when trying to leave Egypt... we were forced to look at our ability to assist future travelers to the country,” Christy Michels, Duke international travel policy administrator, said in the release. “ We are unsure of our ability to aid them once they are there and felt a restriction was in order for the time being.”
