Freshman Laetitia Beck posted a career-best 66 in the first round Sunday of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, held at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, La. The round put her in first place at the end of the day at six-under.
Beck tore apart the front-nine at challenging English Turn, a 6,105-yard par-72 course. After opening with two consecutive pars, Beck birdied both the par-3 third and the 311-yard, par-4 fourth before carding an eagle at the the par-5 sixth to put her at four-under on the day. Beck weathered her first bogey of the round at the seventh and went four-under over the next seven holes. She dropped a shot at the signature 18th hole, a 372-yard par-4, but her 66 was still good enough to anchor a strong showing from the Blue Devils. As a team, Duke sits in second place after the first day, trailing only the tournament host Tulane.
