Duke lost a legend this afternoon with the passing of Reynolds Price, a celebrated writer and teacher.
Price, who died Thursday afternoon days after a major heart attack Sunday, served as a member of the Duke faculty for more than five decades. He was 1955 graduate of Duke and a renowned writer of fiction, essays, memoirs and poems. As a professor he was a noted mentor and served as James B. Duke Professor of English. He was 77.
“With a poet’s deep appreciation for language, Reynolds Price taught generations of students to understand and love literature,” President Richard Brodhead said in a news release. “Reynolds was a part of the soul of Duke; he loved this university and always wanted to make it better. We can scarcely imagine Duke without Reynolds Price.”
There will not be a public funeral due to Price’s wishes, according to the news release. The University has not made an announcement concerning how it will honor his life.
