Three fire trucks arrived after DUPD received reports of flames coming from the roof of Giles dormitory.

Around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, Duke Police and the Durham Fire Department responded to a report of "visual flames" on the roof of Giles Dormitory.

The Duke University Police Department received the report at 1:32 p.m., and at least three fire trucks were on East Campus responding to the scene.

The fire was put out quickly and no one was hurt, according to DUPD sergeant Gary Smith. Fewer than a dozen employees were in the building at the time, and DUPD cleared the building upon arrival. Employees were cleared to re-enter the building around 2 p.m., Smith said.

Smith said there is "very minimal damage" to the dormitory's roofing and wood, adding that there was no interior damage.

Smith said it is unknown what caused the fire. Roofers have been working on Giles' roof for much of the summer, but Smith said there were no roofers on the building at the time of the fire.
