Henrique Cunha, who ended his freshman year ranked No. 3 in the country, will return for his sophomore year at Duke, the Jau, Brazil, native confirmed to The Chronicle Wednesday.
“I’m coming back,” Cunha said. “I’m very excited about it, and I think we can have a very good year.”
Cunha cited the school and the coaching staff as two of the main factors in his decision. He also said that the chance to keep working on his game helped him fend off the temptation to go pro.
“This year, I did pretty well, but I think I could have done even better,” he said. “[Going pro] is always an option, but I saw that I can keep improving my game and my skills here.”
Cunha’s return most likely also means the return of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s top-ranked doubles team. Cunha and Reid Carleton set a school record this year by going 41-6, ending the year ranked No. 1 in the country.
