Demario Atwater pleaded guilty in court today to federal carjacking, kidnapping and weapons charges.
Atwater, one of two men charged with killing former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Student Body President Eve Carson, will be sentenced Sept. 23. According to the plea agreement, Atwater understands he will receive a life sentence without parole and will not be given the death penalty.
The agreement will not affect state proceedings, where Atwater still faces first-degree kidnapping and murder charges.
“While we deplore the evil and negligence that led to Eve’s death, we agree with the U.S. Attorney’s decision to accept the plea agreement. We are very grateful for the dedication and hard work that have gone into the investigation and prosecution of this crime,” Carson’s parents said in a statement.
