What is your perfect idea of happiness? Good health, family together, and doing work that I love.
What is your greatest fear? I fear not remaining healthy enough in my older age to enjoy my wife, children and their children.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I can talk too much and tend to say things at times I shouldn’t have said.
What is the trait you most deplore in others? Laziness and poor awareness to what’s going on around them.
Which living person do you most admire? My wife, Karen. She balances everything she does with great character and humility.
What is your greatest extravagance? I’m not really extravagant at all, but I guess the big house I live in.
What is your current state of mind? My current state of mind is positive energy about Duke Football. I'm excited.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Patience can be overrated; some people confuse it with laziness.
On what occasion do you lie? Only to protect the innocent.
What do you most dislike about your appearance? I don’t like my eyes! Too small and baggy.
Which living person do you most despise? Osama Bin Laden.
What is the quality you most like in a man? Honesty in a man or woman is a great characteristic.
What is the quality you most like in a woman? Honesty, friendliness, kind. All three of my girls—Karen, Katie and Emily—have this.

What or who is the greatest love of your life? My wife, Karen, is my soul mate.
When and where were you happiest? When my children were born.
Which talent would you most like to have? I wish I could sing.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would have a healthy heart.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? Being a good husband and father, are the two most important jobs a man could ever have.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I would like to be an eagle in the mountains! The view must be incredible.
Where would you most like to live? Anywhere on a lake! I love the water.
What is your most treasured possession? Well, we don’t possess people, so I guess it would be my national championship ring.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? The lowest depth of misery is the loss of a life for no good reason.
What is your favorite occupation? My favorite occupation is teaching young people.
What is your most marked characteristic? Being competitive and driven.
What do you most value in your friends? I value friends that say what they mean and mean what they say.
Who are your favorite writers? My favorite writers are Jon Gordon, Ken Blanchard and J.R. Moehringer.
Who is your hero of fiction? My fiction hero is definitely Superman.
Which historical figure do you most identify with? I guess General George Patton.
Who are your heroes in real life? I admire many people of accomplishment—Paul "Bear" Bryant, John Wooden—but my mother, Frances L. Cutcliffe, is my hero.
What are your favorite names? Karen, Chris, Molly, Marcus, Katie and Emily—my family.
What is it that you most dislike? I most dislike littering. How can a person be that arrogant?
What is your greatest regret? I don’t carry many regrets—I’ve been fortunate. Maybe as simple as not playing quarterback my senior year in high school. We would’ve been state champs if I had!
How would you like to die? I would rather die in my sleep but just any non-violent death is OK. Just don’t want to have the family face a tragedy of sudden death.
What is your motto? Either you do or you don’t! No gray! It’s all black and white.
