In her third season as head coach of the women's basketball team, Joanne McCallie has finally led Duke to a regular-season conference title--and for that, she has been named the ACC Coach of the Year by the Blue Ribbon Panel, commissioner John Swofford announced today.
McCallie has guided the Blue Devils to a 24-5 record with a 12-2 ACC mark, tied with Florida State for best in the conference. Duke, however, trounced the Seminoles 73-43 in a matchup earlier this year, giving them the tiebreaker for first in the conference. The Blue Devils are currently ranked ninth in the country heading into postseason play.
The award also gives McCallie a unique distinction among coaches in women's basketball--she is the first coach in Division I history to be named conference coach of the year in four different conferences.
McCallie will attempt to continue to lead Duke to success starting Friday at 3 p.m. in the ACC Tournament, when the Blue Devils face off against the winner of No. 8 seed North Carolina vs. No. 9 seed Maryland.
