Mike MacIntyre Named Head Coach At San Jose State

Duke defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre, the the AFCA's 2009 assistant coach of the year, was announced as San Jose State's head coach Wednesday. He will be formally introduced in a news  conference on Thursday. MacIntyre served two seasons under head coach David Cutcliffe, whom he also worked with at Ole Miss.

By all means, MacIntyre has an impressive resume. He began his career as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee-Martin before moving on to coach the defensive backs at Temple. He went to Mississippi to serve as an assistant under Cutcliffe, then became an assistant under Bill Parcells for the Cowboys from 2003 until 2006 an an assistant for the Jets in 2007.

While at Duke, MacIntyre helped beef up Duke's defense, which last year held opponents to 23.4 points per game -- the lowest average in 20 years. As defensive coordinator, MacIntyre shared his duties with Marion Hobby, who is also responsible for the defensive line. MacIntyre is the first assistant to leave Duke since Cutcliffe took over in December 2007.

MacIntyre is expected to sign a 5-year contract with San Jose State. He will serve as the Spartans' 16th head coach and hopes to reinvigorate a program that went 2-10 this season.
