Amanda Blumenherst picked up her 12th career individual title, tied for the most crowns in school history, and the Blue Devils lost in a playoff to finish in second place at the Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Tuesday. It was the team's highest finish of the season.
Blumenherst, the three-time defending National Player of the Year, shot a 222 over 54 holes to win by two strokes at the par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course. The victory tied Mary Anne Widman's mark of 12 wins, which she set between 1981 and 1984.
The senior entered competition Tuesday one stroke off the lead, and after parring 13 holes, emerged with the win. Blumenherst hadn't won an individual championship since the ACC Championship last April.
"I am really excited that she was able to get the win," Duke head coach Dan Brooks said. "It has been tough because she has had a lot of wins and then had a dry spell. She has worked hard to try to get that back and was able to do it and get that victory. It has to be wonderful to be feeling that again. She is home sweet home when she is winning."
Duke finished 54 holes tied with Auburn for first place, but the Tigers beat them out for the team title in a playoff. The Blue Devils haven't won a team tournament since the 2008 ACC Championship.
