Blue Devils Turn Recruiting Focus Inward

The first part of our three-part series on building a football program at Duke deals with David Cutcliffe's recent focus on in-state recruiting. Here's the one statistic you should care about, even if you don't read the story:

Under former head coach Ted Roof, the Duke coaching staff paid far less attention to homegrown talent, bringing in nine prospects from North Carolina between 2005 and 2008, including none in 2006.

Cutcliffe garnered nine commitments from North Carolina players in his first full recruiting class—or, put another way, as many as the previous four years combined–and has secured at least an additional three for the Class of 2010. Exactly one-third of Cutcliffe's Class of 2009 was from North Carolina.

If you're interested in a better geographic breakdown of the North Carolina commitments, take a look at the graphic above. For those non-North Carolina residents, can you figure out where Duke is?
