The locally inspired Durham Art Walk is a celebration of unconventionality. This weekend, unexpected downtown spaces and businesses will open their doors to the public and showcase the works of over 300 artists. Tours are self-guided, allowing participants to reflect upon the art, chat with artists and listen to live music at their leisure.
The Art Walk began in 1999 when a group of young artists decided to sponsor a gallery walk, said Margaret DeMott, director of artist services of the Durham Arts Council. The event has grown immensely in scope and popularity. The estimated 2,000 people who will partake in the semiannual walk are in for a few surprises.
This spring, the Durham Arts Council wanted to celebrate Earth Day by recognizing eco-friendly artists and businesses, Artist Services Manager Barclay McConnell said. The tour will highlight sites that have some sort of green connection, whether they are LEED certified or include works of recycled material.
"You wouldn't believe the variety of the sites," McConnell said. "Nearly every type of business has art featured."
Although shuttles will be provided, all locations are within walking-distance of one another. The eclectic list includes hair salons, a construction site Brightleaf Square and a former nightclub. Besides featuring artists and works, the sites will showcase Durham cuisine.
According to DeMott, the entire weekend is very "do-it-yourself." Whether you stay for 30 minutes or three hours, talk with every artist or just sample the food, the Durham Art Walk is an interactive experience.
"You will find something you weren't expecting," DeMott said. "We can guarantee that."
The Durham Art Walk is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the downtown Durham area.
