Duke Democrats is pleased to endorse the following candidates in this year's Duke Student Government elections:
Awa Nur for president: As a member of Dukes and Duchesses, a Baldwin Scholar and a three year member of DSG, Nur is uniquely positioned to understand the multifaceted nature of the Duke experience and unite the Duke community under her vision of diversity and inclusiveness. We were heartened by her commitment to transparency in DSG and in the Duke Endowment as well as her pledge to strengthen relations between Duke and Durham. She is guided by progressive values, and in this financial climate, that is exactly what Duke needs and deserves. We believe that Nur is uniquely positioned to deliver results and inspire long term goals for a better Duke. We would also like to note our concern about statements in Mike Lefevre's memorandum on Duke dining (now removed from his Web site) about union employees in the Marketplace and Great Hall. We found his comments to be disturbing, offensive and elitist. As a result, the Duke Democrats strongly recommends that students not allow Lefevre to become the face of Duke University.
Ben Getson for vice president of academic affairs: We were impressed with Getson's record, including his work on a Web site where Duke students can rate their professors. We were encouraged by his commitment to improve pre-major advising and his desire to create more majors unions. Overall, Getson has the experience and the vision to deliver results.
Spencer Eldred for vice president of student affairs: We were impressed with Eldred's commitment to advancing and strengthening a political culture on campus. We fully and wholeheartedly support his call to create a Duke Political Union with a permanent on-campus space. Eldred also has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help him lead this committee to successfully deliver tangible results.
Pete Schork for vice president of athletics and campus services: We were impressed with Schork's willingness to listen to different ideas. We believe that his goals for parking, dining and green initiatives, particularly increasing campus sustainability, will serve the best interests of the Duke Community.
