Group starts collecting data from DukeCards

Duke University Union took a brief break from the Braddigan concert in Page Auditorium to conduct its weekly meeting Tuesday.

The concert marked the first time the organization swiped students' DukeCards at a sponsored event. After meeting with the Director of the DukeCard Office last week, DUU decided to collect personal data from students attending DUU events, beginning with the Braddigan show.

This method provides information about students' greek or Selective Living Group affiliation as well as gender, courses, campus they live on and whether they are in Pratt School of Engineering or Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. The data will allow DUU to determine what demographics are represented at events.

Members also addressed the issue of the faulty speakers and amplifiers in the East Campus Coffeehouse.

"So our Coffeehouse speakers are pretty much broken and this is a problem mostly due to old age," said senior Andrea Marston, DUU Coffeehouse Director and General Manager. "They were donated to us over 10 years ago second-hand to begin with, so the speakers don't match the amps and the amps have basically destroyed the speakers."

The Coffeehouse had to rent speakers for $300 for its last show, she added. She said the problem negatively affects current and future programming for the Coffeehouse, and renting is not cost-effective to continue doing in the long-run.

The Union agreed to fund new amplifiers and speakers for the Coffeehouse. It will give $5,800 toward the new equipment, and the rest of the cost will be covered by the Coffeehouse's depreciation fund.
