Unless you're a major nerd, dole out wisdom in a Yoda voice, argue over whether Han fired first or you know how fast the Falcon made the Kessel Run, I suggest you don't see Fanboys. Otherwise, get in your T-16 and bull's-eye this movie like you did womp rats back on Tatooine.
The film is full of absurd references to Star Wars only true fans can appreciate (my barometer to tell if you will enjoy the movie: whether or not you laughed at my T-16 joke). Fanboys follows five geeks in 1998 as they travel cross-country to steal the then-unreleased Star Wars: Episode I so their terminally-ill friend can see it before he passes. Trepidation, trouble and Trekkies can't stop the gang as they race to the Skywalker Ranch in their van, complete with R2-D2 and homemade hyperdrive. With cast appearances ranging from the whole Judd Apatow clan (Seth Rogen appears as at least three different characters) to William Shatner to Carrie Fisher, the film is an irreverent tribute to the Star Wars legacy and those who worship it.
The drawback to Fanboys is also its strength-there are just so many references. The film has niche appeal, and without a Star Wars background, the jokes will seem as remote as the ice planet Hoth. In fact, all the humor not referring to the trilogy comes across crude and cliche. If you love Darth Vader and Death Stars, you'll love Fanboys. If not, take Admiral Ackbar's advice and realize, "It's a trap!"
