In defense of Will Passo

The Chronicle reported Feb. 24 that Will Passo stepped down from his role as Duke Student Government attorney general to run for another position this Spring in the article "DSG seeks new AG as Passo steps down." While the conditions for Passo's departure were correctly stated, I'd like to clarify one of my quotations that was taken slightly out of context.

In the article, I mentioned that, "Will has effectively done nothing consequential this year in terms of elections." My statement was in response to whether or not Passo's involvement in the election process would give him an unfair advantage as a candidate. I simply wanted to make it clear that, though Passo has helped, he has not made any of the definitive decisions in the election process this year. These decisions have been made by other members of DSG-including DSG President Jordan Giordano, new DSG Attorney General Meg Foran, members of the legislature and myself-after Will stepped down.

Because Tuesday's article did not state any of Passo's other responsibilities as attorney general, or the quality of his work this year, the preceding quotation can easily be misinterpreted. After having worked with Passo all year, I'd like to note that he has done an exceptional job throughout his term. He handled the fall senate elections flawlessly, and efficiently responded to over 100 student inquiries. In addition to ensuring that all of DSG's actions have been in line with its constitution, Passo has been active as the co-chair of the constitution-reforming rules committee. Passo has undoubtedly served beyond his responsibilities.
