No surprise here: After Pittsburgh lost and Wake Forest beat Clemson on the road, the Demon Deacons moved to No. 1 in both polls Monday for the first time since 2004.
In another shocker, Duke moved up to the No. 2 spot in the Associated Press poll and retained its spot in the ESPN/USA Today poll after beating Georgia Tech and Georgetown this week. If both teams win their games this week, they would likely meet in a matchup of the top ranked teams in the country Jan. 28 in Winston-Salem.
What might be a bit more unexpected, though, is that four voters ranked Duke No. 1 in the country (the Arizona Daily Star's Bruce Pascoe, Cincinnati Enquirer's Dustin Dow, San Jose Mercury News' Jon Wilner and the Daily Herald's Lindsey Willhite). Seven voters put Duke at No. 3, and two placed the Blue Devils fourth. The vast majority of writers--including the Winston-Salem Journal's Bill Cole, the Herald-Sun's Bryan Strickland and Chronicle alumnus John Feinstein--ranked Duke at No. 2.
North Carolina stayed at No. 5 this week, and Clemson remained No. 10 after losing to the top team. Georgetown actually moved up to No.12 after losing to Duke but beating Notre Dame.
