Former Blue Devil Mike Grella made an auspicious debut overseas, scoring a hat trick in his first game with English League One's Leeds United, and it appears that he might extend his stay abroad.
Grella, the reigning ACC's Offensive Player of the Year who was on a two-week trial with Leeds, has been offered a contract and a deal is expected to materialize soon, Soccer By Ives reported Friday. Grella owns an Italian passport, making parts of the contract easier to manipulate.
Duke's leading scorer was picked 34th in the MLS SuperDraft, but he did not attend the combine, making it known to MLS teams that he planned to play in Europe.
Darrius Barnes, another MLS draftee, will join the New England Revolution, home of several other former Blue Devils, including Michael Videira.
