The Blue Devil men's and women's squads opened their seasons Saturday at the Tar Heel Invitational, with the women placing second and the men taking third place honors out of five teams.
A freshman stole the show on the men's side, as Michael Barbas tossed the shot put 52 feet, 11 inches, the longest throw for Duke since 1966. Barbas qualified for the IC4A qualifier in just his first college meet.
On the track side, Tyler Clark took the top prize in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.48 seconds.
Sophomore Ryan McDermott won the 3,000 meters and helped the Blue Devils' distance medley relay squad to a first place finish, along with sophomore Bo Waggoner, Cory Nanni and Ken Sullivan.
For the women, senior Anna Farias-Eisner won the mile, clocking in at 4 minutes, 54.17 seconds, and two other Duke runners finished in the top 5.
Molly Lehamn won the 3,000 meters in her first atttempt at the distance. She is usually a miler.
Duke's next meet is the Terrier Classic Jan. 23 in Boston.
