Meredith Shiner's Oct. 28 column "Soulja Roy's night shames Duke's Blue-White"-in addition to, as she admits, being blasphemous-completely misses the mark. Midnight Madness-like events, from the original event at Maryland to "Late Night with Roy", use entertainment, ranging from pyrotechnics to more traditional highlight clips, to upstage the real attraction. Duke's Blue-White Scrimmage, on the other hand, focuses on what's really important to the die-hard basketball fans that these preseason events intend to attract: the performance of the new team. What use is watching Sean Dockery's half-court shot or an old Shane Battier dunk when it will be sophomore Nolan Smith and freshman Miles Plumlee who will guide us to the Final Four in Detroit this year? Let North Carolina continue its barbaric antics, and keep Blue-White just as it is.
