Duke Falls to UCLA to End Season

LOS ANGELES — The Blue Devils ended their season on a disappointing note, getting routed by the Bruins 6-1 as they lost in the national quarterfinals for the second straight year.

UCLA dominated play throughout, posting its first tally in the fifth minute en route to its sixth consecutive College Cup final four. Duke was completely overmatched by a team featuring Pac-10 player of the year Christina DiMartino and Olympian Lauren Cheney, who was called on to the women's national team in Beijing following forward Abby Wambach's injury.

The lone bright spot for the Blue Devils' was a KayAnne Gummersall header in the 15th minute that equalized the score at 1-1. Gummersall, who scored in each match of the NCAA tournament, netted 15 goals on the season. The tally was just the fifth goal the Bruins had allowed all season and only the second goal by an opponent on UCLA's home turf. Unfortunately for Duke, the Bruins scored five unanswered goals from that point.

The Blue Devils finish the season at 15-6-3 and say good-bye to a deep senior class that includes goalkeeper Cassidy Powers, defenders Christie McDonald and Kelly McCann, midfielder Lorraine Quinn and forward Kelly Hathorn.
