In response to Brian Steiner's Oct. 8 guest commentary, "Why I am this close to expatriating": Brian, expatriate. I'll help with the paperwork.
You are too much an intellectual to survive here. In election season in particular, the unwashed masses-cough, Republicans-always betray their pathetic intelligence. (Guns and bitterness are involved somehow too.) Let's sample an internal monologue: I'm worried about high energy costs and socialized healthcare, but Sarah Palin winked at me. She's so hot. Go McCain-Palin!
Fortunately your assessment of my future leaders-since you'll be leaving, I hope-is more nuanced. You watched the vice presidential debate. You observed that Joe Biden seems to know things; Palin, not so much. Wisely, you presented zero well-researched reasons to support either ticket. Instead, you philosopher-king, you prioritized style over substance, trite personal insults over insightful policy analysis.
Oh. Wait. Isn't that what you just accused us dumb McCain voters of doing?
