POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
1. Nolan Smith is ready to lead the Duke offense. After playing a complementary role in conducting the trio of Scheyer-Henderson-Singler in this first half, he took control in the second with a lineup that wasn't as offensively minded and still thrived, this time as a scorer. He should get equivalent playing time to Greg Paulus, and we might even see more of the two of them together, especially after the Blue team ran a quasi-two point guard set with Smith and Jordan Davidson in the second period.
2. Pocius has recovered well from the ankle injury that sidelined him most of last season. He looked mobile, was an effective scorer in the second half, and played his role well without rushing any shots, Krzyzewski said. Expect the junior to compete for minutes at the guard position like he did last year before he went down against Eastern Kentucky.
3. Miles Plumlee was the most comfortable freshman out there. Krzyzewski said that he protected the basket, ran the floor well, moved well without the ball and had good hands. Defensively, he helped take Singler out of his rhythm in the second half. All of the freshman will have a learning curve, but Plumlee looked the most game-ready. Olek Czyz didn't see much playing time, and Elliot Williams had the unenviable task of guarding the red-hot Henderson in the first half and Smith in the second half.
4. Krzyzewski was most effusive in his praise for Smith, who he said "played as well as anyone", but also commended Dave McClure's defense-particularly in the second half on Henderson-and Pocius's veteran presence.
79-70 Blue, END OF SECOND HALF: And that's a wrap. The second half took a significantly different trajectory than the first and with a different result. Pocius and Nolan Smith were the high scorers will 11 points apiece in the second session and Smith, David McClure and Miles Plumlee were the three Blue Devils to win both "games". Postgame recap and quotes to follow.
38.6 seconds, 78-70 Blue, SECOND HALF: It looks like the Blue team will take this half as Pocius knocks down two free throws to extend the lead to eight. He currently stands with 11 points in the half. The White team had their chances to come back: including an uncontested Scheyer 3-pointer that bounced with a little over a minute remaining and two missed Paulus free throws on the ensuing possession.
2:30, 71-68 Blue, SECOND HALF: This half is going down to the wire. Both teams are getting points across the board as no player has reached double figures in this half. Any chance of the game letting loose has gone away as both sides are buckling down on defense, making scoring hard to come by.
4:49, 66-60 Blue, SECOND HALF: We're not seeing the same amount of scoring as in the first half, mainly due to a much lower shooting percentage on both sides. Pocius is putting on a show, with 7 points to lead all scorers and a nice lay-in on a fast break over the arms of Henderson. It looks like the game is starting to turn into a high-flying display, as Scheyer has already thrown two alley-oops to Henderson and Singler and Nolan Smith has attempted a few on the other end.
HALFTIME: The new lineups for the second half are:
HOME TEAM - Duke White
03 Greg Paulus
12 Kyle Singler
15 Gerald Henderson
30 Jon Scheyer
42 Lance Thomas
RESERVES: Elliot Williams, Steve Johnson
VISITORS - Duke Blue
02 Nolan Smith
05 Martynas Pocius
14 David McClure
21 Miles Plumlee
55 Brian Zoubek
RESERVES: Olek Czyz, Jordan Davidson
97-74 White, END OF FIRST HALF: Well that one wasn't even close. The White team dominated from start to finish as Henderson led all scorers with 16 and a perfect stat line: 4-4 FG, 1-1 3PT, and 7-7 FT. The Blue team will be lucky to have a fresh start at 45-45 when play resumes for the "second half".
2:52, 89-72 White, FIRST HALF: Kyle Singler just put in one-hand lay-in on a fastbreak feed from Nolan Smith to extend the lead to 17. Singler now has 10 and is the third double-digit scorer for the White team while Blue still has none.
4:59, 81-65 White, FIRST HALF: Henderson and White are continuing their torrid stretch as they have put together a 10-2 run. Henderson leads all scorers with 12, and Scheyer has knocked down two threes-including one on a break in response to a Paulus miss on the other end-to collect 10 points of his own. No highlight reel moments yet, but there's a lot of basketball left to play.
7:11, 71-60 White, FIRST HALF: Zoubek and Pocius have come to life in the past three minutes to keepĀ Blue in the game with Zoubek putting in two lay-ups and Pocius draining two threes. But the offensive firepower of the White Team is still proving to too strong. Gerald Henderson especially is having his way with freshman Elliot Williams.
10:17, 59-53 White, FIRST HALF: First timeout of the game to welcome in the football team Devil Walk as the players cut through Cameron Indoor Stadium on their way to Wallace Wade. The football team is walking alongside the benches, and are each shaking hands with every basketball player and coach. The band and crowd are going nuts.
Meanwhile, both Duke teams are still showing a lot of love for the three-pointer, despite the line-change, and have already connected for a total of three jumpers from beyond the arc. Greg Paulus is the the only real source of offense for the Blue team-he leads the game in scoring with five-as the rest of his squad is struggling from the field. The White team has had no such problems, with already five players on the scoreboard.
PREGAME: It's about 15 minutes before tip-off and nearly half of the stands remain empty, but the student section is packed and cheering. The Blue Devils came in after a pregame video of the players and coaches each calling Cameron Indoor Stadium "Our House."
