In response to the Sept. 12 column, "Inspired by conservatism," by Oliver Sherouse: On what planet has Sherouse been living on for the past eight years where he manages to find these inspiring conservatives? Couldn't have been here on Earth, in the US, where Republican policies and governance have left our economy in tatters, our security weakened and our leadership morally bankrupt.
Are we to assume all those Republicans running around in the White House, Senate and House aren't real conservatives-just pretend ones? Sherouse says of conservatives, "we believe in a government that works." What a load of utter nonsense. Have we somehow forgotten FEMA, and what a wonderful job President George W. Bush's college buddy Michael Brown did saving New Orleans? Or maybe he was referring to the Justice Department, where Monica Goodling, a 30-year-old political appointee, conspired to trash 220 years of meritorious tradition in denying the placement of best-qualified applicants who might happen to be (or even associate with) liberals? And now, thanks to the hard work of congressman Henry Waxman, Democrat and chairman of the House Oversight committee, we learn that members of the Republican-led Interior Department, who are responsible for selling United States oil and gas leases, have been running around accepting gifts, drugs and sex, from the very oil executives they're supposed to be bargaining with on behalf of taxpayers.
If you believe in any sort of accountability, don't vote on Nov. 4 for the same party that's gotten us into this terrible mess.
