Surging Blue Devils host struggling Davidson

With a 60-percent chance of rain Tuesday night, Davidson can only hope the precipitation will help cool down the red-hot Blue Devils.

Duke hosts the Wildcats tonight at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium for the Blue Devils' first midweek game of the season.

The game could not come at a better time for head coach John Kerr's squad, fresh off a 3-1 upset over then-No. 22 Virginia Tech Friday night.

Kerr's squad is on a three-game winning streak, having beaten Harvard and American in the Duke Classic Sept. 5 and 7, respectively.

Duke (3-2) capped its last game in style, which stands in stark contrast to a struggling Davidson team's (1-4) most recent effort. After taking a 2-1 lead into halftime, the Wildcats saw their match last Saturday against High Point slip from their grasp in the final minutes of the tilt. Davidson surrendered two goals in the last three minutes and lost the contest 3-2.

The Blue Devils, though, are still wary of Davidson despite the Wildcats' late-game meltdown.

"We have been watching the results, but so far, they haven't impressed," Kerr said of Davidson. "We can't take anyone for granted. We are going to try to take it one game at a time."

The Blue Devils hope that Davidson will be another stepping-stone to achieving success this season and a good warmup for their return to conference play this coming weekend. They do, however, want to avoid relying on last-minute heroics to pull out the win. Kerr's squad is counting on its defense to generate the offense it will need to keep the Wildcats tamed.

"The day-to-day goals are the most important," Kerr said. "Tomorrow, we are going to step up our defensive pressure and cause more turnovers."
