The Chapel Hill Town Council was presented with a report Monday night outlining a set of strategies designed to limit the size of the Halloween festivities on Franklin St. Under this plan, the town of Chapel Hill would try to discourage attendance by students from Duke and other Triangle universities. This misguided plan would severely restrict Duke students' ability to enjoy Halloween in Chapel Hill.
Whether the town of Chapel Hill wants to recognize it or not, dressing up for the annual Halloween party on Franklin Street has become a fun and harmless tradition for Duke students. Rather than discouraging student attendance, the town of Chapel Hill should think more creatively about ways to recoup their substantial costs for managing the Halloween event.
I have written a memo to Chapel Hill City Manager Roger Stancil urging that, in recognition of the special connection between Duke and UNC, he keep Franklin St.'s Halloween festivities open to Duke students and that he solicit more input before making major changes to the Halloween event. The full memo can be found online at dsg.duke.edu. I look forward to working with the town of Chapel Hill to ensure that Duke students can continue to enjoy this signature Halloween event.
