The student activities fee is a great... job opportunity. The Chronicle article on Sept. 11, "DSG overhauls fee proposal before vote" was a good try at explaining what in the world Duke Student Government is doing. The article provides more current info than the DSG Web site. I'm for a balanced DSG budget and some student groups-but DSG wants to raise the fee to help provide students with legal aid? This seems utterly ridiculous to me. The DSG Web site states "Whether you've had a rough weekend at Shooters or picked up a speeding ticket on 15-501, you'll be able to get all the legal advice you need right on campus."
So here I find the job opportunity. How about DSG pay me $150,000 (what will be budgeted) to tell students to stop breaking the law? I realize there are other reasons to get a lawyer but as the Web site suggests, most of the time it will be a defense attorney. I am not willing to pay for other students' mistakes. If you break the law and need a lawyer, then face the consequences and stop asking me to pay for it.
