DSG in general-and DSG President Jordan Giordano in particular-do not understand how to communicate. I do not mean communicate effectively. I mean communicate at all. The latest of its poor decisions is the biweekly newsletter. In a time of budget crisis, DSG will increase its bills. In a time of controversy, DSG will produce mom-look-what-we-did bulletins. And, in a time of low-cost, instantaneous global communication, DSG will print an ink-and-paper newsletter. Groundbreaking-in 1998.
DSG, start a blog. If you have one-as I've heard--update it. It's free. It utilizes the medium that students favor overwhelmingly. It's free. It can be updated easily and frequently to ensure a constant flow of relevant updates. It's free. It could be a resource hub and direct viewers to relevant information; few wander the DSG site now. It's free. Its comments section would encourage student feedback (and fact-checking)-impossible to accomplish with plain old paper. Also, it's free.
Really, DSG, it's not good to threaten ending subscriptions to important newspapers one week and to offer "free" updates on your wonderfulness the next. That's worse than bad communication: that's just bad manners. If you don't know why, write a letter home and ask.
