In Friday's NCAA men's javelin championships, redshirt freshman John Austin placed eighth out of the 12 finalists, garnering automatic All-American status. His throw of 216'-10" was good enough to make him only the second freshman in the top eight and the first male Blue Devil to earn All-American honors since Brett Warner did so in the pole vault in 2003.
Austin was the only Dukie to make it to the NCAA Championships held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Next up for the young thrower, as well as several other Blue Devils, is the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio from June 20-22.
