I fail to see the educational or informational value of the May 15 column "Summa cum loony," by Kristin Butler.
I understand that you are attempting to provide an outlet for free speech and the freedom of press, but this particular column borders bigotry and has subtle undertones of racism and stereotypes the students of NCCU, one of the most prestigious universities in the nation.
I worked hard for my degree and am a productive member of society. I cringe at the thought that anyone would so boldly make the statements embodied in this column. NCCU has educated many doctors, lawyers, politicians and social activists during its history. Its students, like the students of many universities across the nation, have played a pivotal role in shaping this country.
Again, I do not understand the purpose of this column. The purpose of the paper is to bring insight. I would not expect a university such as Duke to align itself with the content of this column. I've always thought of Duke as being a "classy" institution that was a steward of the Durham community and its neighbors and I will not allow this particular columnist to tarnish my vision.
