Chris Spatola, a graduate assistant and head team manager, was named Duke's director of basketball operations by Mike Krzyzewski, his father-in-law, Tuesday. Spatola replaces Mike Schrage, who left Duke for a spot on the Stanford bench under former associate head coach Johnny Dawkins. According to the official release, the director of basketball operations is responsible for summer camps, travel and day-to-day activities within the program.
Spatola, a 2002 graduate from the United States Military Academy, played point guard for four years at Army, following the lead of Krzyzewski. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his role in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Before serving his five years and coming to Duke, he was a graduate assistant at Army during the 2002-2003 season.
