Letter to the Duke Community

Dear Duke Community Members,

As you must have heard in the news, a massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Southwestern China with its epicenter in Sichuan Province on mid-afternoon Monday (May 12th, Beijing Time). The death toll across China rose to 14,866 by 2 p.m. Wednesday, with thousands more still buried under debris. This is a natural disaster of a scale that few could imagine. The earthquake was shallow and centered in a mountainous region close to a very dense population center. The county where the epicenter is located is also very close to the largest natural reserve for endangered Pandas. The damage to the property in the vast region is beyond estimation.

I am writing to ask you, if you can, to send in donations to help the rescue and relief of the earthquake. Twelve local organizations are organizing the donation (for details, see the dukechina.org website).

Please make your donation online at: www.cafanc.org/donate

You may also donate by mail by writing your check, payable to Chinese-American Friendship Association, at P.O. Box 898, Cary, NC 27512.

Only monetary donations are accepted; material donations are not

accepted at this moment. Every penny of your donations will be sent to

the Chinese Red Cross for exclusive use in the earthquake rescue and

relief efforts. CAFA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your

contribution through CAFA for this special disaster relief fund is

tax-deductible.

Thank you for your attention and donation.
