Human Giants

For giants, these guys seem awfully plain, but don't judge them by their meek appearances. Paul Scheer, Aziz Ansari and Rob Huebel (stars of MTV's Human Giant) have some of the largest comic personalities in the land.

Giant is the best sketch comedy show on MTV since David Wain's The State in the early '90s. MTV has a lot of ground to make up in the comedy world after the abominations that were Nick Cannon's Short Circutz and Snoop Dogg's Doggy Fizzle Televizzle. If you missed the first season, now is your chance to own the eight-episode set on DVD.

Given the availability of TV shows on the Internet, there is usually not much incentive to own a season DVD. However, the season one DVD manages to pack in more than enough to make the purchase worth it.

The first and most obvious reason to own Human Giant on DVD is the episodes themselves. The comedy is very brash and straightforward but has subtle tones if you watch very carefully. Irreverent and often full of non sequiturs and absurdities, the short sketches will either leave you on the floor laughing or silent and awkward after realizing that you almost laughed at a joke about little kids starring in a 9/11 movie.

Although the season is short-a glaring negative-there are more guest stars than a full season of SNL. The three-man crew is often supported by a slew of obscure comedians (Nick Kroll) and indie musicians (Tapes 'n Tapes).

The first season DVD also has more extras than an episode of The West Wing. Almost every episode has two hilarious commentary tracks that are often as entertaining as the episodes themselves. The second DVD contains highlights from the Human Giant 24-hour marathon, deleted scenes, unaired sketches, outtakes and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

The Giant DVD packs giant comedy and giant extras for a not-so-giant price-cheesy pun aside.
