End of CLAP program disappointing, a shame

As a former managing editor of The Chronicle who never really considered a career in journalism, I was disappointed to hear of the possible demise of the Chronicle Leadership Assistance Program. CLAP gives a small number of students the chance to spend a year doing something totally outside the ordinary without worrying too much about how it would hurt their academic coursework. I thought of it as "Study Abroad at 301 Flowers": it might have removed me from the conventional Duke community for a year but it also let me taste a very different way of life. The year I spent as a CLAP staffer gave me perspectives on my own role and abilities that I still value almost 10 years later. It would be a shame to see those experiences lost so that four more students can take Statistics 110 in January rather than June.
