This Tuesday, summer classes at Duke were in session, in spite of the Independence Day holiday. During the rest of the academic year, Duke also has classes in session on Labor Day and Memorial Day.
The only holiday Duke does cancel classes for is MLK Day, which falls less than a week into the spring semester. Duke jumps through countless scheduling hoops to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., one of our nation's most deserving heroes.
Yet it is an unspeakable shame that when faced with the same scheduling challenges, Duke does not put forth the same effort to honor the thousands of American heroes the rest of the nation honors on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Independence Day.
Duke should follow the lead of other area institutions like UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest and honor all of our American heroes, not just one.
